The Doll Hut: Closed

The Doll Hut closed its doors on December 31st, 2012. It was truly a legendary place as explained by Roy B. on Yelp:
"I've seen a lot of great bands here and a lot of not so great bands here too. Punk, metal, rockabilly, surf, you name it. Many bands cut their teeth here at the Doll Hut and some like Social Distortion and the Offspring sometimes returned after they had made it big to play surprise performances. Many consider the Doll Hut to be the CBGB's of the west coast.

The Doll Hut is the Webster's poster child for hole in the wall dive bar. Its tiny 2 car garage sized interior is held together with stickers from every band that's ever played there. Its gritty and raw this is what an intimate performance is all about. Even the bathrooms at this place are punk. http://www.yelp.com/biz_…

The Doll Hut is an Anaheim Icon. Built in the 1920's as a private residence, the Doll Hut became a truck stop cafe in 1936, a bar in the 1950's and a music venue when bought by Linda Jemison in the 1989. And when Linda's Doll Hut closed its doors in the summer of 2001, it was thought to be the end of an era. Luckily a couple who met at Linda's took over the space and reopened it that fall. It continued to feature live bands, often sold-out crowds and even occasional Sunday barbecues. Cheap covers and cheaper beer made this a special place.

But sadly enough the Doll Hut will be shutting down her doors again at the end of the year 12-31-12. Maybe this time for good.  http://www.yelp.com/biz_…"

So where has the punk scene gone? It is largely dispersed among various venues and skate parks. Here is one way you can still stay connected:

Paradise In Exile

Next live show is May 30th at the House of Blues in Hollywood!

A change of pace calls for metal music. An immediate shift into overdrive calls for Paradise In Exile. Based in Fullerton California, Paradise In Exile (PIE for short) blends progressive brutality and aesthetic atmosphere in a way that has never been heard before. Not only does PIE aim for unique sound, they also seek to perform in a style separate from the expected. Sound and visuals can be traced to guitarist Kurt Hessian. Odd musical timings and even more odd stage spontaneity are his specialty.

Next to Kurt, also on guitar, is Collin Haase. Collin, a classic rock fanatic, puts his own groove into intricate riffs and high energy performance. With percussion in his bones, Jon Royer uses his sixth sense of drumming to propel PIE's sound to the heaviness and fluidness that is required to melt faces. Jon, bound to his drumming throne, will still match the rest of the band's energy. Next, putting the heart-shaking low sound in their music, is Stephen Pickering. Stephen can usually be seen jamming on stage with classic head-bangs.

Last, providing aggressive vocals, is Nick Gorman. Every song screamed is a roller coaster of pitch and style, wound together with bizarre rants. You will find Nick rocking-out on and even off stage. Paradise In Exile is dedicated to inspire and entertain their audience and fans. Music is their inspiration and entertainment too! Are you hungry for PIE?

Southern California’s Lightning in a Bottle Arts and Music Festival Announces New Date and Location

Southern California’s beloved art and music festival Lightning in a Bottle is getting a new home and dates this year. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors  approved the application for Lake Skinner County Park to host The Do LaB’s famed sustainability music festival, which will run for its eighth year from July 11 to July 15, 2013.

Previously held during Memorial Day Weekend at Orange County's Oak Canyon Park, the annual four day festival was prompted to find a new location when new zoning resulted in the park bordering Conservancy-owned land, forcing out all large-scale music festivals. The Orange County Fire and Sheriff’s Department provided letters of recommendation to assist the festival in securing its new location.

Lake Skinner County Park is a hidden gem of Temecula in Southern California that The Do LaB feels fortunate to have found for their long term plans. The new site, which sits on a peninsula next to the lake, will expand the capacity of the event to 15,000 participants as well as provide more facilities like full RV hook-ups, while yielding the same natural beauty and open space that made previous festivals so well received.  Besides the beautiful view, the new location is also more compact, making the grounds easier to navigate and providing for a more comfortable camping experience.

An amazing lineup of music, speakers, workshops, and performance art is in the works and will be announced on April 23, 2013. The festival will once again feature three main stages for music and performance art along with multiple smaller stages and interactive areas spread throughout the festival grounds for participants to explore and discover workshops, speakers, and intimate music sessions. These smaller stages and interactive areas will also keep the festivities going all night long after the main stages close each night. To beat the heat, there will be daytime water areas and features planned to keep participants cool, similar to The Do LaB's Oasis stage at Coachella.

Regular ticket sales will begin on March 18, 2013 on Lightning in a Bottle’s website.

ABOUT THE DO LAB / LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE
Based in Los Angeles, The Do LaB’s mission is to create experience as art and bring communities together. Aside from showcasing electronic music artists at their monthly events in Los Angeles and San Diego, The Do LaB are best known for their unique art installations/stages and cutting edge acts at the inner misting Oasis stage at Coachella in addition to producing Southern California’s Lightning in a Bottle and the game changing 2012 Winter Solstice event The Great Convergence which took place at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Lightning in a Bottle is known for its unique atmosphere that focuses on art, spiritual well-being, and sustainability as much as it does on music. It has become the crown jewel of the underground sound that is driving culture from its west-coast and London roots all the way into the laptops of middle America. The Do Lab’s work has also been showcased at Virgin Music Festival, Global Gathering, Portugal’s Boom Festival and many more. For more information about Lightning in a Bottle, visit www.lightninginabottle.org or follow LIB at www.facebook.com/LightningInaBottle or The Do LaB athttp://www.facebook.com/TheDoLaB and https://twitter.com/TheDoLaB.

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys (Last Show)

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys are having their last show in two weeks :(

When: Saturday, February 16th
Where: Dipiazzas
NEO GEO is opening for them.

More information about the show can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/528100040547440

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys has been a band since 2006.

They collectively have toured 15 countries, played in front of thousands of people over the years. They have won the Orange County Music Awards - "Best Live Band in Orange County Award" as well as "Most Memorable Front Person In Orange County Award". Been nominated again for best Punk Rock Band in OC. Whether you've seen them playing at Staples Center for the LA Kings Rocco's Live Music Showcase, in a back yard or at any festival, they are always a sight to see. Franki Doll & The Broken Toys has gotten to share the stage with many amazing bands such as ESCAPE THE FATE, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, SHINY TOY GUNS, FINCH, THE DONNAS, VANILLA ICE, TOO SHORT, KOTTONMOUTH KINGS, FACE TO FACE, THE MISFITS, I AM GHOST, LUDO, WU TANG CLAN, BULLETS & OCTANE, MANIC HISPANIC, TSOL, THE ADICTS, D.I., AUTHORITY ZERO, MODERN DAY ESCAPE, THE DICKIES, AGENT ORANGE, CADILLAC TRAMPS, MANIC HISPANIC ... and many many more over the years.

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys have managed to gain national support from the chain Hot Topic who carried their freshman CD independently in their stores across the USA...

Franki Doll & the Broken Toys has been called "the hardest working unsigned band in the US"... over and over again.

One things for sure... they put their heart and soul into everything they do. Just ask their fans "THE BROKEN TOY ARMY"...

Franki is an independent producer and video dj who has spent much time supporting smaller unsigned independent bands to get recognition with her online TV show called "FRANKI DOLL'S TOYBOX" on FLASHROCK.COM. She also does guest interviews for HOLLYWOOD MUSIC TV as well.

Franki helps throw cancer benefits and spends time talking to people about the trials she has undergone, she is a survivor of a suicide she witnessed 3 months after turning 18 and has been an advocate for helping prevent teen suicides since then. Franki Doll is affectionately known for her altruistic heart and actions any place she can help raise awareness & heal.

She is what she calls "using her gifts for the reason they were given to her". Franki believes that we are all unique and amazing, some of us have found our greatness, some are still looking, and she invites you to read her lyrics, listen to Franki Doll & The Broken Toys music - "You may find yourself there too"...

WELCOME TO THE BROKEN TOY ARMY!!!

I watch this little girl... 5 feet tall, covered in tattoos - teeny little girl - stand up at the microphone, smile at us, and yell with all her might to the crowd: "You may love us... and... You may hate us! But you WILL f**king remember us tomorrow!!!" As the band blows my face off with the first song... and they were right... I REMEMBERED THEM... fell in love with them, and have been a fan ever since. They were the best live band I had seen in years.

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys have been called "The Hardest Working Unsigned Band" in the US, won the OC Music Awards "BEST LIVE BAND IN ORANGE COUNTY" award & "Most Memorable Front Person Award", and called "The most incredible live band you've never heard of"... but truth be told, they are just 5 friends, who love to be with each other and play music.

Based out of Orange County, CA. these 5 musicians have set out to do the impossible, and it seems they are well on their way. They have no record deal to speak of, they have no financial backing, they all work regular 9-5 jobs and pour their heart and soul (and paychecks) into every song they make. Their music isn't polished or written for them, it is raw, and real and from within... the music comes from real life experience of pain and loss and life and new chances and the ability to say "So What, yeah, that happened, "NOW WHAT?!" Their singer Franki Doll has been a staple in the music scene for many years and is known underground for her online TV Show "Franki Doll's Toybox", and guest appearances with some of the greats.

Thanks to the "Local Static" program across the US with ShockHound and Hot Topic, Franki Doll & The Broken Toys was able to place their very first CD, "Step Right Up" in select stores across the US. Franki Doll & The Broken Toys is scheduled to be Hot Topics "Unsigned Band Of The Month" for January 2011.

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys have opened for bands like The Misfits, Escape The Fate, Story Of The Year, TSOL, The Adicts, I Am Ghost, Authority Zero, Rufio, Face To Face and many many more... they have won the OC Music Awards Best Live Band category, and have won every single Battle Of The Bands they have entered.

Their fans - called "The Broken Toy Army" are some of the most loyal fans you will ever meet. They invite you to join the Broken Toy Army... and find yourself a home with the rest of the Broken Toys of this world. If you've never been broken, you won't get it... but if you have... every song that pours from their instruments will touch your heart.

Franki Doll & The Broken Toys are one of the most energetic and amazing acts you can experience live. Get their CD's at HOT TOPIC across the U.S., on iTunes or your favorite online store... you won't be dissapointed!!! JOIN THE BROKEN TOY ARMY

"In Orange County, the band Middle Class, from Santa Ana, was probably the most influential; their "Out of Vogue" is sometimes considered the first hardcore recording. The original hardcore bands in Orange County came from the Fullerton, Ca area, where The Adolescents, Agent Orange and Social Distortion and D.I. formed."- Wikipedia
